80 years of Vespa – time for a love letter to the old lady from SIP Scootershop

by

Dear Vespa,

80 years. Just let that sink in for a moment. Other vehicles of this age have long since been restored, polished and reverently placed under a dust cover. You, on the other hand, still rattle, hum, buzz and glide through Rome, Paris, Bangkok, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Landsberg am Lech and, it feels, through every second summer photo in the world. You are not just a means of transport. You are a promise: once you get on, everyday life becomes a little lighter.

You were born in Italy in 1946, shortly after the Second World War. Back then, PIAGGIO was looking for a new idea for affordable mobility, Corradino D’Ascanio thought differently from traditional motorcycle designers – and the result was a scooter that looked as if someone had cast technology, elegance and dolce vita in sheet metal. On 23 April 1946, the name Vespa was filed as a patent. The first Vespa 98 was simple, practical, economical – and yet, right from the start, much more than merely sensible. Umbrellas are sensible too, after all. But nobody hangs a poster of an umbrella on their wall.

Even your name was a stroke of genius. “Vespa” – wasp. Small, agile, with a waistline and a sound you recognise before you even see it. And let’s be honest: anyone who has ever ridden behind an old Vespa knows that even a small wasp can attract quite a lot of attention.

From post-war idea to design icon

In the 1950s and 1960s, you became an icon. Suddenly you were everywhere: in front of cafés, on beaches, in narrow alleys, on cinema screens, in the dreams of young people. You stood for freedom, independence and mobility – at exactly the time when music, fashion, youth culture and a whole attitude to life were reinventing themselves. You were never just transport from A to B. You were the more beautiful way in between.

And then there is that Italian attitude to life: an espresso standing at the bar, sunglasses in your hair, the engine still warm, somewhere the smell of the sea, hot asphalt and two-stroke oil. A Vespa does not simply set off. It turns the moment into a scene. Even if it is only rolling down to the bakery, it looks like the beginning of a film. And if it does not start? That is not a defect. That is character building with a kickstarter.

Over eight decades, you have reinvented yourself again and again. From the Vespa 98 to the legendary sheet-metal classics, from Smallframe to Largeframe, from Primavera to PX, from Rally to GTS, from the scent of carburettors to Elettrica. You were young when our grandparents were young. You were cool when our parents wanted to be cool. You were cult when we started tinkering with you. And today you are still here – for collectors, commuters, tuners, travellers, city riders, café racers, Sunday riders and people whose eyes light up at the word “sheet metal”.

Almost 20 million Vespa scooters have been built or sold since 1946 – and yet each one somehow feels personal. That is your great trick: you are a global star, but never distant. You stand in front of palazzi and pizzerias, workshops and beach bars, student flats and collectors’ garages. And all over the world there are people who immediately start telling stories when they see you: about their first ride, their first breakdown, their first trip, their first love – or at least their first seized piston.

A wasp connects the world

We at SIP Scootershop have long known you as much more than just a category in the parts catalogue. We have travelled after you – or perhaps more accurately: you sent us out into the world. To Asia, to the USA, across Europe, to clubs, workshops, collectors, races, custom builders, mechanics and wonderfully passionate enthusiasts. Whether Bangkok, California, Italy, England, Spain, France, Austria or small garages somewhere between an Alpine pass and a backyard: there is a Vespa everywhere. And almost always, someone is standing next to it saying: “Come on, let me show you something.”

That may be the most beautiful thing about you: you speak every language, even if your dialect sometimes sounds like two-stroke. You bring together people who might otherwise never have met. A few screws, a little petrol, a shared look under the side panel – and suddenly you are right in the middle of a conversation. Vespa fans exist on every continent, in every age group, in every style. Some polish every chrome part with a toothbrush; others ride across Europe with a luggage roll and cable ties. Both are right.

For us at SIP Scootershop, you are more than a product category. You are the reason why screws, cylinders, Bowden cables, exhaust systems, clutches and brake drums became a passion. You taught us that a scooter is not finished just because it runs. It may brake better, sound nicer, pull stronger, travel further, sit lower, rev higher – or simply become exactly the way it once was. You are the smell of the workshop, a travel story, a parts catalogue, a regulars’ table, a race track, a Sunday ride and family history all in one.

Dear Vespa, thank you for 80 years of freedom on small wheels. Thank you for scratches with stories, chrome with patina, engines with soul and rides that were supposed to last only ten minutes and somehow turned into three hours. Thank you for friendships, clubs, meetings, journeys, projects, custom builds and that special magic when an old engine starts somewhere and someone immediately says: “Sounds good.”

Stay the way you are. Or rather: stay as versatile as you have always been. We will continue to make sure that you ride, brake, shine, rattle, sparkle and sometimes go a little faster than originally planned.

Happy 80th birthday, Vespa. Here’s to many more years together!

You are and will remain the most beautiful wasp in the world!
