Safe riding starts with the right helmet

by

Riding a powered two-wheeler offers freedom, but also demands responsibility. Without the protective shell of a car, riders rely heavily on safety gear… most importantly, the helmet.

A motorcycle helmet contributes to protection not just in crashes but also in everyday riding, shielding against weather, wind and road noise. A well-made helmet can make a crucial difference between minor injury and something much more serious.

The numbers behind helmet safety

According to recent UK Department for Transport figures, motorcyclists remain one of the most at-risk groups on the road.

In 2023, they represented about 20% of all road fatalities, despite forming just 1% of total traffic. Head injuries continue to be the leading cause of death among riders. Research reviewed by the World Health Organisation shows that helmets can reduce the risk of fatal head trauma by up to 69% and the risk of brain injury by around 65%.

How helmets work in an accident

Helmets are designed to act like a car bumper, absorbing and spreading impact energy. In a collision or fall, the outer shell deflects initial force, while the inner foam liner cushions the head, preventing direct trauma. This layered protection is what helps prevent serious head injuries.

Among helmet types, full-face helmets provide the most coverage and are widely considered the safest. No matter the style, the helmet should meet trusted safety standards such as ECE 22.06 or DOT.

Understanding helmet lifespan and damage risks

Even if a helmet appears undamaged, it doesn’t mean it’s safe to use. According to e-commerce firm AUTODOC, the lifespan of a motorcycle helmet is up to five years under normal conditions, provided it hasn’t been dropped or exposed to harsh elements.

Over time, exposure to sunlight, temperature shifts and moisture degrades both the outer shell and the inner foam.

As AUTODOC notes:  “With time, the materials, including the foam liner and outer shell, can deteriorate due to exposure to sunlight, temperature changes and general wear and tear. Furthermore, if your helmet has ever been involved in a crash or significant impact, you should replace it immediately as the structural integrity may be compromised.”

Even a small fall from a table or handlebars can create internal damage that isn’t visible from the outside. That’s why replacing the helmet after any significant impact is a smart move.

Proper care makes a real difference. Here’s how to help your helmet last:

  • Store it in a cool, dry place, away from heat sources and direct sun
  • Clean it gently using water and mild soap, never strong cleaners
  • Don’t hang it on handlebars, where it can fall easily
  • Check fit and straps regularly. If it feels loose or the padding is worn out, consider replacing it.

Your helmet isn’t just an accessory, it’s essential gear. Choosing a good one, treating it well and replacing it when needed are small steps that can have a major impact. Whether you ride every day or just on weekends, your safety starts with what’s on your head. Investing in a helmet that’s in top shape means investing in your future as a rider.
