The Very Best of the Undertones is released on 11 October and is our second offering from Northern Ireland this month. Emerging from Derry in the punk boom of 1977-78, The Undertones gave us a fine selection of short sharp songs with infectious choruses – kind of pop music with attitude for those that don’t like their records too sugary sweet.
The hits included the seminal Teenage Kicks and also My Perfect Cousin, Jimmy Jimmy, Here Comes The Summer, It’s Going To Happen and a host of others, all of which present and correct on this CD. Of course over the four albums they produced there were many more songs, some of which you’ll know and others you may not but which will nevertheless strike a chord with you as they are delivered in that familiar and unique style that the Undertones had.
A trait of many acts of the time and one that’s sadly missing in today’s charts of manufactured music. This CD not only showcases the best of The Undertones but includes a 20-page colour booklet with liner notes from band member Michael Bradley, My Life As An Undertone. as well as bonus promo videos for Teenage Kicks and My Perfect Cousin. A tidy little package indeed.
