Advice, ideas, trade tips, useful hints and more...
Internet forums might seem great, but ask a question on four different websites and you could get six different answers. We thought it a good idea to try and gather all this information together and share it with a wider audience. So, if you’ve got a technical question, and if no one else can help you, then you can ask us here at Scootering.

If we don’t know the answer, then we’ll find somebody who does. Equally, if you can help any readers out with answers or advice, then please drop us a line.
Either email torque@scootering.com or write to Tech Torque, Scootering Magazine, PO Box 99, Horncastle, Lincs LN9 6LZ.

Tech Torque - March 2012

Vespa starter

I recently purchased a 2003 PX 125 with very low mileage. When I bought the bike the battery was not wired up so I was unable to check the electronic ignition. However the bike did kick start and has done ever since.

The problem I have is that when I tried to connect the new battery the ignition starts to kick over as soon as the wires are connected. This is happening even when the ignition key is switched to the off position. As soon as the connectors touch the battery it starts turning over.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hello Paul. It sounds like your problem is caused by the starter motor relay. It is faulty and stuck, causing a constant ‘open’ circuit. The solution is simple; you need a new one and they cost about £12 each. They are located under the spare wheel side panel and are simply a plug in and go part. - Graham, Kegra Scooters

Spanish Lambretta parts

Can you please tell me where Barrie obtained his Winter Model horncasting for his staff project Lambretta, El Tigre? I’ve tried a couple of places and had no joy.

Richard Farr

Hi Richard. Mine came with the scooter and I was lucky that it’s in one piece. If you want an original Eibar part try placing a wanted advert in Scooter Trader here in Scootering, or on our website at www.scootertrader.com
If you want a ‘new’ part then Buzz SoloMoto (www.buzzsolomoto.com) offer repro Spanish horncastings, and Winter Model headsets too if you need one of those as well. - Barrie Braithwaite
