Pornoyacht Reloaded
By: Web Editor
The 1980s are known for many things, but it is one of those few decades where rose-tinted spectacles are clouded by negative comments and memories. There were of course a lot of bad things from that era and, depending on where you were at the time, ‘excess’ was one of them. A great example of 1980s excess is jumping out at you from these very pages and, while maybe not the Wall Street version excess such as rich bankers (yes, that is rhyming slang!), there’s certainly a lot here for you all to comment on.
There’s been a bit of a fad of late with old custom scooters being resurrected and brought back to life, but it seems that other parts of 1980s scooter style are also becoming fashionable again. Here’s a scoot that combines both, that’s Eighties style with parts previously seen on another bike making a reappearance with a new owner.
Pornoyacht Reloaded also balances up the accessorised Lambretta on page 68, reminding us all that bolting on a ton and a half of aftermarket goodies may have started in the 1950s and 60s, but it certainly ain’t over yet.
The thing worth mentioning however, is that the 1980s appears to be the last time that a ‘new style’ of accessories for scooters was developed. Granted, there’s only so much you can do with a traditional Vespa (or Lambretta come to that), but we saw chrome plated badge bars and carriers in the 1950s, crash bars and spotlights in the 1960s, and an excess of chromed ‘everything’ with a million mirrors in the late 1970s, and then in the 1980s the aftermarket manufacturers came up with versions of all that had gone before – but squarer and made from plastic. And what have we had since? Not a lot to be honest, apart from a return to what was available in the 1960s and 70s. I don’t know what the next direction for accessories should be, but it would be nice to see a range of something new (apart from a sat nav bracket!) for scooters that in years to come would typify the noughties.
Anyway, back to Pornoyacht Reloaded which is a Vespa P80X owned by Yoleila from Germany. So there’s your first talking point; it’s an 80cc PX which for those that didn’t know, does exist and was produced by Piaggio in Italy in the 1980s and 90s for the German market to comply with motorway regulations there. An 80cc PX was also Yoleila’s first ever scooter, so when she found this example for sale, in original condition (the paint is called ‘Azzurro Metallizzato PM 5/2’ apparently), she jumped at the chance to have it...
