Feature Scooter: One of the few
By: Web Editor
September 15 1940: 70 years ago this year Hitler, Goering and his Luftwaffe launched what was to be the decisive attack to crush Britain’s RAF once and for all.
Their calculations convinced the Nazi hierarchy that Britain’s airborne defensive capabilities were a spent force, but as the formations of fighters and bombers crossed into British airspace they were met by more fighters than their intelligence thought existed. Losses inflicted on that day forced the planned invasion of the British mainland to be postponed... indefinitely.
Scooter Details
Name of scooter: One Of The Few
Model: 1971 Lambretta GP200
Inspiration for project: After getting knocked off three months after I bought the scooter in 2008, by a bitch who left the scene of the accident, I decided to rebuild the bike and dedicate it to Sailor Malan, one of, if not the finest pilot in the Battle of Britain. It's ironic that he and many others from the Commonwealth and other countries came to Britain to fight the Nazis, while today a minority come to this fine country and want to blow us all to kingdom come...
Time to build: Built by myself, 22 months from strip to completion.
Frame modifications: Hidden servo and master cylinder for disc brake. Tried to keep the scoot looking as standard as possible.
Engine: 250 RB, Rayspeed crank, 34mm Dellorto flatslide carb, blueprinted, SX200 gearbox using standard sprockets, 6-plate Readspeed clutch, 120 watt BGM stator, casings fully ported matched and polished, cylinder head skimmed and profiled, PM fat Mamba exhaust pipe.
Top speed: Sorry, still running in but I get the feeling it’s bonkers!
Paintwork & murals: Ashley Markham at Kustomizing Studio did the base coat. Dave Dickinson the murals and artwork. Dave did the front, didn’t like it, and did it again before I even saw it. That’s either mad or the work of a perfectionist!
Engraving: Not for me thank you
Powder coating: Trev at Midas Touch
Chrome plating: Trev at Midas Touch.
Gold plating: Keith at Quality Chrome
Overall cost: Exactly half a day’s pay for Wayne Rooney to the penny, but the bike's 50 times prettier and more useful!
Hardest part of the project: Bleeding the brakes was a laugh – four grown men, two evenings!
Advice for anyone starting a project: Follow Sticky’s book, don’t rush, if stuck just ring Neil Brodie.
Anything to add: Maybe a sprint rack.
Favourite dealer: Mike Stringer at KBS Scooters and Pat at Lambrettarestore. Always approachable, especially as he opens his shop late on Wednesdays and Fridays to give the lads a chance to get parts after a working day.
Thanks: Neil Brodie for the engine build and patience, top man. Mark Godley, Brian and Duncan (all the best for you new start in Cyprus). Ashley for the base paint, Dave and Claire Dickinson for creating a dream with passion and enthusiasm. My wife Gillian for not nagging too much when using the Dremel and grinder at all hours.
