Helping thieves – Facebook, Twitter and Google
By: Andy Gillard
We've said it a couple of times over the last year or so in the magazine, about how thieves are using the internet more and more to help them target new victims. Now the press have caught on to it too, so here's a reminder that while we are proud of what we do and where we go, we should careful who we share this information with.
As Scootering has suggested in the past (and the recent article currently doing the rounds on news websites also says):
DON'T use your address or even home town on your Facebook, Myspace or Twitter pages.
DON'T announce if you are going on holiday or a scooter rally. That's simply telling thieves when your home wil be empty!
DON'T post holiday or scooter rally photographs until you are back home. Nothing is more appealing to a thief than a photo which says 'look at me, I'm 500 miles away from my house'.
DON'T show a potential thief what they may find in your garage while you are on holiday.
DO make sure when accepting 'friends' on Facebook, MySpace etc that they are genuine friends, and not a common thief simply scouting for new targets.
DO install a visible deterrant in your house and garage/ shed – alarms and security lights are a good start.
DO look at your address on Google Streetmap. If you think the images shown portray your house as vulnerable, then ask Google to delete them.
DO buy a good padlock and chain for your scooter, and attach it to something very solid like a ground anchor or tall concrete fencepost.
