El Tigre - Seis

We thought it might be useful to share some of our scooter building experiences with you, some tips, hints and ideas that many of you may find constructive when in your own back yards, garages or sheds. We’d also welcome your feedback and tips too, both for ourselves and other readers, so please drop us a line and share it with everyone in the world of Scootering. Moving on from last month, I’ve got a pile of shiny white Spanish Lambretta bodywork and an engine casing that looks like it’s just been recovered by Tony Robinson and his ‘geophys’ boys on Time Team.
Thin back plate support; not the best thing to use today. Inset; The brake support on this Series 3 hub is much bigger than on the original hub. Bigger and stronger means less chance of it breaking and therefore of you getting a lift in an Ambulance.
Brake-fast
Next comes fitting the forks which, funnily enough left me with another quandary. I had originally intended to put an inboard front disc brake on it with dampers, purely because I love the look of them. The brackets welded on to the forks to hold the front mudguard in place would support the dampers too, with a little bit of fettling. The other reason behind this idea is that the original hub backplate is the Series 1/early Series 2 type with a thin support around where the fork link slots into it to stop everything rotating and killing you when you apply the front brake. It is possible to either have some extra support welded on or fit a Series 3 backplate. And, after much deliberation, I decided to keep it looking original and swap the backplate over and use the drum brake, which of course hadn’t been touched since I removed it and now needs painting!
With the original fork links and link bolts blasted and replated, the original springs and rods were in perfect condition so after a good clean and a healthy covering of grease the forks were rebuilt with new buffers and fitted to the frame. Then taken back out of the frame so that I could fit the turning front mudguard that I had forgotten about... D’oh!
