Competition: Win a custom paint job worth up to £2500
By: Web Editor
To the regular readers of Scootering magazine the name Dave Dickinson should seem familiar; and no, he’s nothing to do with the orangey-looking antiques dealer named David Dickinson who appears on our TV screens dealing in ‘cheap as chips’ treasures!
With over 20 years experience of painting behind him, our Dave was a time served traditional sign-writer before he set up his Custom Air Brushing business back in 1997. Since then he’s been painting Vespas and Lambrettas, first for the local lads and then more further afield as his reputation grew, helping create some of the finest, show-winning scooters we’ve seen in recent times.
Like all good artists, Dave is no one-trick pony. Yes he’s got that annoyingly wonderful and creative talent that means his custom airbrush skills allow him to recreate on panel work photograph quality images, but also his previous trade as sign-writer has served him well when working on scooters such as Harbour Lights and (one of my favourites) Fairground Attractions; the latter featuring more traditional methods of painting to recreate ‘all the fun of the fair’ on a Lambretta scooter.
Dave has also produced some stunning street-racer style machines such as the pair of LUFC Vespas, and the Martini Lambretta which also contribute to the countless list of trophy-winning scooters he’s had a hand in over the years.
Dave’s latest venture is to produce a limited run of race replica style scooters to be known as the DDK Street Racer Series which will be launched at the Isle of Wight Scooter Rally. Inspired by Maca’s AF DTC painted scooters of the 1980s, Dave’s created his own design to bring this popular style of scooter into the 21st century. At the time of writing Dave is just completing the demo scooter of this new series, his own Lambretta GP, which he’ll be showing at the Isle of Wight over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Incidentally, Dave will also be doing some live painting at the rally, so if you’ve never seen such an artist working before, get yourself down to the Custom Show at the Ryde Ice Rink on the Saturday and prepare to be amazed!
Back to the DDK Street Racer scooters, as well as his own scooter which you can see at the IoW, Dave has sent us his artist’s impression on canvas as well as a computer generated version of his new design. All the striping and graphics will be the same throughout the series, but customers will be able to customise their DDK with their own colour scheme and number and also have the rider’s name sign-written on the panels. People can pre-order theirs and choose their own number and once that number is gone, it's gone. After all, it is a limited run! And to make life easier for you, Dave even offers a ‘three easy payments’ method so you can spread the cost of a custom spray job.

Scootering’s 25th anniversary DDK Street Racer
One number that has already been allocated is 25, and that’s because to celebrate 25 years of Scootering Magazine Dave Dickinson has kindly agreed to donate a DDK Race Replica custom paintjob to one lucky reader as a competition prize. Each scooter’s panel-work will be done from bare metal, which will involve being sandblasted free of charge (worth approximately £170) courtesy of Guy at Ryedale Blast (07899 802024) who regularly blasts scooters for both Dave Dickinson and AF Rayspeed. The winner’s panel-work will then be etch primed and flatted, then primed with 2k primer basecoat and airbrushed before being finished with nine coats of 2k clear lacquer. Lastly the machine will be polished to a glass like show quality, as seen on all of Dave’s scooter paint jobs.
Dave tells us that although the DDK Street Race Series has been initially designed around the Lambretta GP model, it should be possible to adapt it for other Lambrettas and even classic Vespas, so basically if you have a geared Lambretta or Vespa that you’d like finished in a DDK Street Racer style, then this competition is for you.
The value of the work that will be done by Dave Dickinson and his team will be (up to a maximum of) a whopping £2500 and we’ll be following the process of the customisation of the scooter step by step and featuring it here in Scootering Magazine at a future date.

TERMS & CONDITIONS SPECIFIC TO THIS COMPETITION
The free paintwork prize offered in this competition applies to common/popular models of classic style geared Vespa (eg Piaggio, Douglas and LML models) and Lambretta (eg Innocenti, SIL and Serveta models) scooters. The winner will notify us of the model they wish to be painted and the final decision lies at the discretion of Dave Dickinson. Let’s be honest, it’s not really going to work on a Model D Lambretta, is it! We are sorry but the competition prize does not apply to modern automatic scooters, whether plastic or metal bodied (for example but not limited to Vespa GTS, Vespa ET4, Vespa LX, Gilera Runner, Italjet Dragster, Piaggio MP3). There is no cash alternative to this prize. The winner will have to arrange their own transport of their own scooter to and from Dave Dickinson’s studio near Bridlington at their own cost. The prize consists of prepping and painting the main body parts of either a Lambretta or Vespa scooter; frame, legshields, side-panels, front mudguard, floor boards, horn-cover, headset. If the winner would like other parts painted at the same time, such as forks, wheel rims, hubs etc, this is to be negotiated with Dave Dickinson and will incur a cost at the winner’s expense. The scooter must be dismantled prior to delivery to Dave’s studio and all the relevant pieces delivered together at the same time. The panel-work to be painted must be in good condition. The value of the prize does include minor bodywork to be carried out by Dave, but anything beyond this may incur an extra expense which must be paid in advance by the competition winner. Panel-work considered in poor repair and unsuitable for painting may be rejected completely and the winner asked to supply alternatives. If in doubt, please discuss it with Dave Dickinson in advance. The winner agrees for their scooter to be photographed by Scootering magazine during the process of the painting and may be asked to feature in publicity in the magazine once the scooter is finished. The prize paintwork is to be completed by April 2011 at a time to suit both the winner and Dave Dickinson. The winner is therefore expected to make their scooter available for painting before this date. It is the prize-winner’s responsibility to collect the painted parts from Dave Dickinson upon completion and reassemble their own scooter at their own expense.
